Data sheet
The NSU Kettenkrad light vehicle was produced at NSU Motorenwerke in Neckarsulm in southern Germany and at the Stoewer plant in Szczecin in 1940-1945 in the amount of 8,411 units. After the war, with the consent of the occupation authorities, about 500 more were produced in Neckarsulm until 1948 for civilian purposes (fire brigade, forestry). Half-track traction: front wheel and handlebars as in a motorcycle, tracks in the rear. Interestingly, the manual recommended removing the wheel and moving only on tracks in particularly difficult terrain. The vehicle was powered by a 36 HP carburettor engine and was moving on the road at speeds of up to 70 km / h. In the basic version, it was intended for the driver and two passengers. The vehicle was intended as standard for towing light guns or trailers. Due to the wide application, many different variants have arisen. For example, in the version for communications services, it could carry two drums with cables. Yet another version was equipped with a crane intended for workshop services. There was also an armed version for the Luftwaffe with a 7.92 mm machine gun and protected by armor plates with slots for observation. The users generally positively assessed the Kettenkrads, but considered the disadvantages of a complicated structure that made servicing difficult.
The Goliath self-propelled mine was a remotely operated cargo originally intended to destroy particularly important shelters. The lethal vehicle was powered by an electric or internal combustion engine and could carry up to 100 kg of explosive material. Tracked traction allowed for operation in difficult terrain conditions. Control and detonation took place via a telephone cable. Goliaths were most often used in city fights, incl. in the Warsaw Uprising, but they were also used in non-urbanized areas. A total of over 7,700 units were produced.
