Transporters of this type were produced at the Hanomag factory (previously in Borgward) in cooperation with other German plants in the years 1939-1945. In total, about 16,000 transporters were produced. Data: length 5.8 m, width 2.1 m, height 1.75 m, weight 7 tons, drive 100 HP six-cylinder petrol engine, half-track traction, 21 km / h off-road speed. Armament: two 7.92 mm machine guns, 14.5 -5.5 mm armor. Crew 2 + 10 soldiers. The SdKfz 251/1 version was basic. Based on the experience, the structure of the vehicle was modernized. For example, the 251/9 version was equipped with a 75mm short-barreled cannon, and the 251/10 version with a 37mm anti-tank gun. The main task of the transporter was to transport ten soldiers. In total, twenty-three versions were designed.
These vehicles were used on all fronts of the war. Only in Operation Barbarossa it turned out that these were not transporters for the Russian winter and rainy weather. Mud and frost disabled the transporters.
After the war, the transporters, modeled on the SdKfz 251 with the Tatra diesel engine, were produced in Czechoslovakia under the name OT-810 and were used by the Czechoslovak army until the 1980s. Lots of SdKfz. 251 has survived to this day, often in working order.
