Description

The multi-role aircraft designed by the German brothers Horten Ho 229 was the world's first flying wing and the world's first stealth (hardly detectable by radar) aircraft. Stealth properties, moreover moderately effective, were obtained by applying a coating made of a mixture of coal, ash, wood, steel and glue. Research carried out in 2009 on a replica of this aircraft showed about 40% effective reflection of radar waves compared to a typical war plane. The prototype was made and tested in 1945 in Gothaer Waggonfabrik in Gotha in the Third Reich - hence the alternative name of the Gotha Go Horten 229. It was the first aircraft according to Göring's requirements in the 3x1000 scheme, i.e. with a range of over 1000 km, speed up to 1000 km / h and a load capacity of up to 1000 kg. The plane was propelled by two jet engines, thanks to which it reached a maximum speed of 977 km / h. They were armed with two 30 mm cannons, two 500 kg bombs or 24 unmanned rockets. This plane, although it was supposed to be a "wunderwaffe", did not play any role in the hostilities. At the end of the war, the US intelligence intercepted two copies during assembly. They were transported to the USA, where they probably inspired the development of work on the stealth plane. Currently, both the Ho 229 and the 2008 replica are in the National Air and Space Museum in Suitland, Maryland.
