Description

The Junkers Ju 88 bomber was produced during World War II at the Junkers & Co Warmwasser-Apparatenfabrik plant in Dessau. Work on the design of the aircraft began secretly from the world in 1935. Serial production of the Ju 88 A-1 was started in 1939, after many tests, the design was improved from a prototype to an airplane prototype. An interesting fact is that two Americans hired by the Germans, specialists in the field of designing aircraft components, took part in the work on the bomber. Another interesting fact is that British intelligence did not know anything about the work on this bomber. The Ju 88 A-1 was powered by two 2680hp engines and reached a speed of 470 km / h. The crew consisted of 4 people. Armament: two 7.92 mm machine guns, one 13 mm machine gun, bomb load 3000 kg. The bomber was basically a multipurpose aircraft, it was even called a "German Mosquito" because it was also used as a night fighter, torpedo bomber, and reconnaissance aircraft. The A-1 version was modernized during production. A total of 9 versions were created, from A to T. The A versions alone were 14. By 1943, the 8300 Ju 88 was planned to be produced, but the reality of war corrected these plans downwards. For fear of Allied bombing raids, the Mittelwerk factory was located in carved caves near the Mittelbau-Dora labor camp. 40,000 prisoners were used to work.
