Description

The submarine ORP Sokół (formerly HMS Urchin - translated "falcon") was built at the British shipyard Vickers Armstrong in High Walker near Newcastle in 1939 - 1940. After the loss of polish submarine ORP Orzeł in June 1940, the Polish command unsuccessfully attempted to recover the interned in 1939 in Sweden the ships Sęp, Ryś and Żbik. The British authorities have been asked to hand over / lease any new warship under construction. In this way, HMS Urchin found its way to the Polish Navy. The ship entered service on January 19, 1941. Propulsion: two 615 hp diesel engines or two 825 hp electric motors, surface / underwater speed: 11/10 knots. Draft 60 m. Armament: 76 mm gun, three 7.7 mm machine guns and four torpedo tubes. The crew (some officers and sailors transferred from ORP Wilk) 37 officers and sailors. The period 1941-1945 are the ship's patrols in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1942, it underwent a major renovation in England, and then returned to the Mediterranean Sea. She has had considerable success sinking at least 14 enemy units, including one warship. She fought hand in hand with the twin ship ORP Dzik. Both ships in the Allied Navy were called "terrible twins". In July 1946 he was returned to the Royal Navy and returned to the name HMS Urchin, where he remained in reserve. In September 1949 it was scrapped.
