Description

The destroyer ORP Grom (a twin of the destroyer ORP Błyskawica) was built at the British shipyard J. Samuel White in Cowes on the Isle of Wight in the years 1935-1937. Drive: two 54,000hp steam turbines driving two propellers. Speed: 39.6 knots. Primary armament: seven 120mm guns, two twin 40mm AA guns, four twin 13.2mm heavy machine guns, six torpedo tubes, two depth charge launchers. A crew of 192 officers and sailors. Before the war, the crew was intensively trained, the ship also participated in foreign courtesy visits representing the Polish Navy (Tallinn, Riga and Copenhagen). Shortly before the outbreak of the war, in the last days of August 1939, three destroyers: Błyskawica, Grom, Burza, on the orders of the command, sailed to Great Britain. The ships were modernized to increase their combat efficiency. Destroyer Grom protected convoys in the Atlantic and North Sea. He also participated in the Norwegian campaign. And it was during this campaign that he was sunk in the Rombakkenfjord by a Luftwaffe bomber. 59 crew members were killed. The wreckage of ORP Grom was found on October 6, 1986 by the Royal Navy of Norway during work in the fjord. The broken ship lies at a depth of 105 m. In Narvik itself, there is a monument dedicated to the fallen ORP Grom sailors.
