Description

Jeremiah O'Brien is one of 2,710 Liberty ships.

The launch of the production of this type of ships in 1942 was a response to the high losses of cargo ships resulting from the operation of the Kriegsmarine. The idea was: simple structure, low costs, low labor intensity of production, modern technology (welding instead of riveting the hull). The construction time for the Liberty ship is only 41 days! Each ship was equipped with a 102 or 127 mm gun and three 20 mm anti-aircraft guns.
Fun fact: in September 1942, there was an attack by the German rider HSK Stier. As a result of the attack, the Liberty sank, but Stier was so damaged by the Liberty's guns that it sank too. After the war, disarmed Liberty ships continued to sail the seas, carrying goods, and until the beginning of the 1960s, new ones were built.

Jeremiah O'Brien was built in mid-1943 at the New England Shipbuilding Corporation in South Portland, Maine. 134 m long, 17 m wide, displacement 14,500 tons, speed 11 knots, 1 straight propulsion, steam engine to operate, crew of 42 sailors plus 127 mm and 76 mm gun service and 3 20 mm AA guns with which the ship was equipped. SS Jeremiah O'Brien made 7 voyages: England, Ireland, South America, India, as well as eleven voyages through the English Channel to support the invasion of Normandy. After the war, the ship was disarmed. He was transferred to the reserve fleet in San Francisko. It is now a floating museum. In 1994, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of D-Day, he crossed the Panama Canal, the Atlantic and presented himself at the D-Day celebrations in Portsmouth, England. She was the only ship at the celebration to physically participate in the Normandy invasion.
