Description

The British Hunt-class destroyer, HMS Bedale, was handed over to the Polish Navy on April 30, 1942 and served in the Allied fleet as ORP Ślązak. 85 m long, 9.6 m wide, speed 27 knots, displacement 1,490 tons. The ship was armed with six 102 mm guns, four 40 mm anti-aircraft guns, launchers and depth charge throwers. A crew of 160 seamen.  In August 1942, the ship took part in the Dieppe rally. As you know, the Canadian commandos rally was an unsuccessful operation, mainly due to the terrible intelligence preparation. However, ORP Ślązak showed its claws. He shot down 4 German planes, crashed German coastal batteries, fought U-boats and enemy speeders, saved an English pilot, and twenty Canadians. In addition, breaking the order, he rescued 82 Canadians from The Royal Regiment of Canada from the beach and for this action the commander of the ship was awarded. From May 1943, the ship escorted convoys in the Mediterranean Sea fending off U-boat attacks. He covered the Allied invasion of Sicily, escorted the damaged battleship HMS Warspite with nine destroyers. In December 1943, he escorted a convoy transporting Gen. Anders' II Corps from Alexandria to Brindisi. During the landing in Normandy, it covered the landing on the Sword beach.  In September 1946, the ship was withdrawn from service in the Polish Navy and returned to the Royal Navy as HMS Bedale. In 1953, he entered service with the Indian Navy as Godavari. In 1976 it was decommissioned and scrapped.  On November 28, 2019, on the occasion of the 101st anniversary of the establishment of the Polish Navy, the flag was raised on the ORP Ślązak patrol corvette built at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna SA.
