Description
The legend of the Flying Dutchmen has captured the imagination of sailors since the 17th century. The story tells how the captain of a Dutch ship, Hendrik Van der Decken, was carried through the stormy waters of the Cape of Good Hope by a disregarded, terrified man, and a God available at any cost. He was then attacked and forced into eternal wandering with his galleon, never to return to port.
Secondary sailors believed that encountering the cursed sailing ship portended trouble and often death.
The legend sparked the imagination of playwrights, poets, and painters. It became the basis for "Pirates of the Caribbean," where the ship is known simply as the Dutchman and sails under the command of the fictional Captain Davy Jones.
