Description

The RMS Titanic was launched in Belfast in 1909 and was to be the largest and safest ship in the world. The displacement of the steamer was over 46 thousand tons. tone. The anchor alone weighed 16 tons! The ship was to carry 2,584 passengers and 500 crew at a speed of 22 knots. The length of almost 3 soccer fields and the width of half the field made it worthy of the name. The drive was made of two steam engines and one low-speed turbine which set in motion three propellers. The ship's owner was the White Star line and the experienced Edward J. Smith was the captain.

The ship left Belfast on April 2, 1912, to arrive in Southampton the next day. Here he was to take most of the passengers on board and collect food and 4.5 thousand. tons of coal. The tugboats began to tow the vessel away from the wharf, where it almost collided with the vessel City of New York. Some on board took this as bad omen and left the deck.

The ship's cruise began as planned. The captain's intention was to get the Atlantic Blue Ribbon awarded for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic. To increase his chances, the captain developed a new route. The Titanic was supposed to take a shortcut off Newfoundland, which would shorten the distance but risk encountering an iceberg.

After covering more than half the distance, twenty minutes before midnight, on April 14, 1912, observers from the bow stork's nest reported that they could not see anything because there was fog. When the iceberg was noticed, it was too late to react. The ship traveled about 10 meters every second. After noticing the iceberg, the machines were stopped and the rudder was put overboard, but this did not save the ship. The Titanic struck the ice with its side, creating a gap extending through 6 watertight bulkheads.

Initially, no one took the collision with an iceberg seriously - after all, the Titanic was supposed to be unsinkable! Only after about an hour did everyone understand that the ship was sinking. 1,502 people died in the Titanic disaster.
